Describe your business
ACE Golf is a golf instruction business that I run in my backyard. It focuses on using technology and years of understanding golf and the golf swing. With this technology, we can find flaws or problems in a person’s swing and help them fix them. We use a launch monitor and a radar-based system to track the ball. This can follow the ball’s speed, spin, and height trajectory. Data is input into a program that can hit driving ranges and golf courses to see accurately what a ball is doing. At a driving range, it’s harder to see what the ball is doing. You can see real-time data when the ball is hit. In addition to playing golf, I can also capture high-speed video of the golf swing. The naked eye makes it hard to see exactly what’s happening. There are two high-speed cameras, 250 frames per second—one face-on and one down the line(behind the golfer toward the target line). Using the two camera angles, you can see the club shaft and head to see many things that you wouldn’t be able to see without the cameras—helping people hit the following real-time and find ways to help them with the high-speed —called led swing catalysis. There is a software that I run alongside the high-speed cameras.
Where are you originally from?
I’m originally from the Bay Area
What made you decide to open this business?
I decided to open this business because I am passionate about golf and teaching. Many people have told me I should be a teacher or instructor because I’m interested in various things. I realized how hard it is to improve by yourself. Watching videos can be essential to improve, but it can be hard to capture your problems. I get the enjoyment of assisting others in getting better at their swing.
How did you get started?
It first started with me building an outdoor golf simulation bay. I started with a net and realized it would be better to have a covered space, so I created a gazebo. Then I looked into technology I could use and afford to make the simulation bay look perfect. I finally moved onto the business side of things by getting a license and insurance. Quite a few things are involved—the physical work of getting the bay set up and what tools I wanted to use.
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you?
What motivates me is I get enjoyment from clients. Clients text me and tell me they have been hitting better since coming to the simulation bay. I love seeing the results, and it’s cool to hear back from clients.
What has surprised you most when owning a business?
I expected it a bit, but still a little surprising. It is hard to start the initial business. Initially, it is a slow grind, and it takes time to get the news out about the company. I just want to get enough customers where I’m comfortable and happy. I know It’s a grind and will take a bit of time.
What was it like when you first started?
When I got my first customer, I was super nervous. It felt like playing a big game. I got the same excitement and nervousness when clients were coming. All these clients are coming to me to get better and see improvement, which is a huge motivation for me.
What would your customers say they love most about your business?
It is a relaxing environment to learn. I know clients enjoy being able to see real-time information. As soon as they hit the golf ball, they can look at the screen and see how it is being hit. Thus far, customers have enjoyed getting to know me and sharing a common goal of getting better at the game.
What are your goals over the next year?
My goal over the next year would be to increase my clientele. I would also like to add the ability to do golf club fitting.
What are your greatest challenges?
My greatest challenge is being able to keep up with the technology and, overall, finding new clientele.
How long have you lived in the neighborhood?
I’ve lived in Tracy for 5 1/2 years
What is something most people don't know about you?
Most people don’t know that I love building and getting creative. I could buy a chair or table, but I prefer to make it my way to fit my style.
What is your most memorable customer experience?
My first customer did a google search to find a golf instructor near him. Then he prepaid to make his and her golf lesson so he could give it to his wife as a Christmas gift. It was the first hit to be something for the business.
What are your favorite things to do in the neighborhood?
My wife and I love to walk to Gretchen Talley park and walk our dog. We also love to go downtown and get coffee or boba.
What else do you do besides work?
I’m a big gamer. I love video games, playing guitar, and binging shows with my wife.
Anything exciting going on that customers should know about?
We are having a beginning of the year discount. New year discounted pricing. 30% off? We are also having a downtown official grand opening at the chamber of commerce—the official ribbon cutting will be in March.
What is the best way for customers to contact you?
On the website or call/text me directly. You can go to acegolfinstruction.com through the website, which has my phone number and email. You can call at (925) 209-3504 or email at acegolf9@gmail.com
Who from your childhood had the biggest impact on you? And what did that person teach you?
My parents have had the biggest impact on me. I got to see a loving family and strong marriage go on for about 60 years. I learned how to stay committed and loved even through tough times.
If a young person asked you for advice on how to live their life, what would you tell them?
A wise person listens to opinions and advice and adds to their understanding and wisdom. It’s a good thing to seek counsel, pick through information, and gain insight from those who have already gone through similar things.
When your life is over, how do you want to be remembered?
When my life is over, I want to be remembered as a christ follower.
